AGA Corner: An Appetite for Sports Betting

As a member of the gaming community, you are well aware of how consumer demand for legal sports betting is transforming the policy landscape across the country.

Since the Supreme Court deemed the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) unconstitutional last year, 11 states and the District of Columbia have authorized sports betting. 22 states have active bills to legalize sports betting in their jurisdictions and additional states are likely to consider sports betting legislation in 2019.

Early this year, we released new research that found an overwhelming majority of Americans – 63 percent – support the U.S. Supreme Court decision to strike down the federal ban on sports betting. Additionally, a record 8-in-10 Americans support legalizing sports betting in their states.

As Sports betting expands across the nation, it proves the American consumer has an undeniable appetite for legal, regulated sports betting.

The American Gaming Association (AGA) has led efforts and initiatives towards this goal, by providing constant industry research – ranging from numbers on main sporting events including the Super Bowl and March Madness, to key events like the recent Sports Betting Executive Summit: a gathering of the country’s leading executives in the sports betting ecosystem to address its expansion in the U.S.

AGA has also focused on eradicating the illegal market and bringing the benefits of legal, regulated sports betting to the large portion of American adults who want to engage in sports betting. Progress is being made, but there’s still work to do.

AGA will continue to serve as a resource to the industry to discuss and inform about this booming opportunity.
